Scholarships Are Available for Eligible Students

Michael Bustamante

If you are a student in need of financial assistance, you will find that college scholarships are readily available. They can be found to match specific education levels, talents, backgrounds, and other specifications.

Scholarships are granted to students of all ages, ethnic groups, religions and interests. Qualifications can include achievements, experiences, and anything educational and motivational or imaginable. Scholarships are available for education in vocational, trade, and technical schools, online schools, community colleges, four-year colleges, universities, and military institutions.

Each year, millions of dollars are awarded to students attending higher education institutions the world over. Some scholarships cover full costs of education, including tuition, books, and living costs; some match financial need; and still other scholarships are local, small, and intended to support students in making education or institution choices.

Some scholarships are one-time only, and others are renewable monetary awards. Recipients are selected on varying qualifications such as financial need, grade point average (GPA), honors, participation, potential to succeed, leadership qualities, activities, work experience, and goals. To qualify, the applicant may be required to be a member of a particular group, creed, religion, race, or gender; qualification may also depend on such factors as ability, disability, and national origin, to name a few.

Unlike college loans which must be reimbursed, scholarships should never cost the student (or his or her parents) any money and do not need to be paid back. Beware of scammers operating to snare the unsuspecting with high-pressure tactics and "promises" and "guarantees" for scholarships, grants, and financial aid packages requiring upfront payments for the "opportunities" they offer! Never hand over money for a scholarship that "guarantees or your money back," nor should you give a credit card or bank account number, or answer a "youve been selected" phone call or letter to receive a scholarship. A true scholarship award would never be associated with such tactics.

Scholarships are awards based on eligibility requirements established by particular scholarship sponsors. Winning a scholarship is a matter of good work done by the student who is vying for the honor. Students should discuss possibilities of scholarships vs. student loans with school counselors, advisors, and teachers, as well as sponsors of scholarships in question.
